About Us
Simply put, Avon Community is a place where you will find warm, loving, down-to-earth people that have been loved to life by Jesus Christ. We deeply value relationships - with God and with others. These relationships are deepened through impacting times of teaching from scripture, inspiring worship, vibrant adult, student, and children’s ministries. We love people of all ages and backgrounds, and we would be honored if you decide to visit us, and maybe even consider being a part of our family.
Beliefs
Through the avenues of preaching, teaching, and singing, the CHURCH OF GOD of Anderson, Indiana has consistently affirmed that the written source of what we believe is the Bible. We have attempted to remain Biblically-based without becoming creedal. The Bible is central in our teaching ministry.
Key Doctrines We Proclaim:
- We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible (Genesis 1).
- We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made (John 1:1-14).
- We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified (John 16:5-16).
- We believe that all scripture is inspired by God and is the authority for the Christian life (II Timothy 3:14-17).
- We believe in conversion, which is the renewal of life at its deepest level through repentance and trust in the forgiveness of Christ (Acts 2:36-39).
- We believe that conversion places us in the church and that no other formalities are necessary (Acts 2:47).
- We believe in Christian holiness, that is, the commitment to become Christ-like in our actions, attitudes, words, and thoughts (Romans 12:1-2).
- We believe that God through His Holy Spirit desires to dwell within the life of every believer, producing Christian character and resulting in Christian service (fruits of the Spirit and gifts of the Spirit) (Galatians 5:22-26, I Corinthians 12).
- We believe that the Kingdom of God is both a present reality as well as a future hope (Luke 17:20-21; Matthew 25:34).
- We believe in Christian unity which makes us a part of one universal church (John 17:20-23).
- We believe that baptism by immersion is for believers who have confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and that it symbolizes the newness of life that we have in Christ (Acts 16:25-34).
- We believe that communion is an act of remembrance, which symbolizes Christ's sacrificial death on our behalf and an act of communing with Christ and His Body (I Corinthians 11:23-29).
- We believe that footwashing symbolizes the servant role to which Jesus Christ calls His disciples (John 13:1-17).
- We believe that Christ will come again at a time of God's appointing and that He will come in judgment. Those who are in Christ will dwell with God forever in Heaven, and those who are not in Christ will be separated from God forever in Hell. (I Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 25:31-46).
What To Expect if you visit Avon Community
When you arrive at Avon Community Church of God you will be greeted at the front doors, by people who want to help you feel welcomed and at ease about being in a new situation.
What Happens Next?
The greeters at the front door will answer any questions that you have, and will direct you to a seat in the main worship area. If you have children (kindergarten and under), you will have the option to take your child to the appropriate children’s ministry area. Each service will include a special children’s object lesson for those children who remain in the worship service.
Before being seated, you’ll be given a Worship Folder (sometimes referred to as a “bulletin”, which has in it, the week’s announcements and future events. The Worship Folder always has a special insert included so that you can take notes of what you’ll hear–these are often good to refer back to during the week. There is also a special section in the Worship Folder that gives further information for first-time guests. Finally, you will notice that there is an optional attendance card in the Worship Folder, which you are invited to fill out, in order to help us get better acquainted – you can leave this on the seat as you leave, or give it to the attendant at the door.
What Are The Services Like - How Long Do They Last?
Our worship service begins at 10:00 AM with a welcome and a few announcements. As a guest, you will never be asked to identify yourself by standing or to raise your hand–so fear not! Generally though, the worship leader will ask everyone to stand and to say hello to those around them. Our real focus on Sunday morning is worship. For that reason, we begin right away with music. Our Worship Team is made up of singers accompanied by various instruments like: drums, acoustic and electric guitars, piano, and keyboards. At times, there will be a drama or video story to further explore the day’s theme.
The morning message will usually be about 30 minutes long (give or take a little). The goal of each message is to teach the Bible in an intelligent, understandable, and relevant way. Hopefully, you’ll be able to directly apply each message to your life. The Bible is used in our services and the passages that are mentioned will be seen on the large screen. By the way, our pastor teaches from the New Living Translation (NLT).
At the close of each message, the pastor will encourage everyone to reflect on the teaching, as a song is played. Some people might choose to kneel and pray at an area designated for prayer, during this time. This is totally voluntary. Most people choose to reflect while remaining at their seats, as the closing song is sung.
Although we can't be certain exactly when the morning service will end, the service will usually conclude at aproximately 11:30 AM.
What Do I Wear?
You’ll notice that everyone is dressed comfortably. Most people wear “office casual” clothing. Yet, you will also see some wearing jeans and others wearing suits. We want everyone to come as they are, so dress as you feel comfortable. In our worship services, we instill the value that the audience is God. As such, we do want everyone to come with that in mind and to dress accordingly.
What About Communion?
Once a month, we celebrate Communion during the morning worship service. Communion (also known as the Lord’s Supper) is a celebration for Christians to remember the self-sacrifice of Jesus Christ. During communion, our Worship Team will be playing and singing. Communion is a voluntary act when believing Christians are given a broken piece of flat bread and a small cup of grape juice. Both of these elements are symbolic of the bread and wine that Jesus used at the Last Supper with His disciples (the night before Good Friday). Each person gets their own (bread and cup) and they are served so no one has to stand or come forward.
After The Service What Happens?
After the service, you’ll pick up your kids from their classroom (if applicable), and then we hope you’ll stay around and meet some people. Church is about God and worship, but it’s also about community and relationships, so we hope that you truly experience the warmth and friendliness of Avon Community. It’s the people (not the building) that make the difference. Our guests tell us that they really felt welcomed at our Sunday morning services. That is the kind of feedback we like to hear. We hope that the phrase “at home” comes to your mind when you visit with us. Know that we’ll be looking for you!
